How to Solder

(This is the first of a series of technical articles for newcomers to ham radio. Future posts will can be found here and all will be archived under the category “technical”.)

One of the first things a new ham will want to know is how to solder. If you erect an antenna, you’ll want to know how to solder connectors and wires. If you enjoy building kits, then soldering is an art you will want to learn.

Here’s a great online tutorial on soldering that will tell you everything you need to know to get started. The ARRL has a PDF by VK3AOH on soldering.

Locally, you can buy a soldering iron or a gun at Sayal Electronics in Burlington or at one of the parts stores located in Mississauga on Matheson Blvd. west of Dixie Road.

Finally, here’s a good introduction to soldering PL-259 coax plugs by W8WWV.
